Join Our Team as a Machine Automation Engineer!
We're currently seeking a talented Machine Automation Engineer to join our Semiconductor ALD Business Unit. In this role, you'll design the software and automation that brings our atomic layer deposition (ALD) equipment to life - building control solutions for fully automated system clusters used in semiconductor manufacturing around the world.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
As a Machine Automation Engineer you will design, develop and maintain the automation software for Beneq ALD equipment. Alongside project deliveries, your work will drive the continuous development and maintenance of our existing automation systems — from the first line of code in our development laboratory all the way to commissioning at customer sites.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Design, develop and maintain software solutions that meet high safety and reliability standards for controlling machines in a fully automated system cluster
- Design and improve HMI applications and user interfaces for machine operations
- Conduct and participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and adherence to best practices
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and analyse requirements, translating them into technical specifications
- Create and maintain technical documentation for the software systems
- Conduct testing activities during tool delivery, including simulation testing in our development laboratory
- Commission equipment at customer premises
- Support our Software Application Support Engineers with questions coming from the field
What We're Looking For:
To excel in this role, you should have:
- A strong engineering background with 4+ years of experience, typically a BSc or MSc degree in automation engineering.
- Experience with automation instrumentation and electrical drawings.
- Experience with structured text coding (IEC 61131-3) in a PLC environment.
- Proficiency in SQL and NoSQL databases (Postgres, MSSQL).
- Familiarity with UML and other modelling methods.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD tools.
- Knowledge of HTML5 and JS-based HMI design tools.
- A solid understanding of software development methodologies and software quality assurance principles.
- Solid problem-solving skills, a self-guided and customer-oriented mindset, and a can-do attitude.
- A technical mindset with great attention to detail, a structured way of working and strong documentation skills.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Willingness to travel approximately 50–60 days per year to customer premises worldwide.
Bonus Skills (Not Required but Nice to Have):
- Knowledge of Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 or Codesys environments.
- Experience with C#.
- Experience from the semiconductor industry or other high-tech equipment manufacturing.
What We Offer:
At Beneq, you'll have the unique chance to work in a global high-tech environment that blends the dynamic energy of a fast-growing company with the stability and resources of a larger enterprise. You'll work on our own product development, with global operations and services in Japan, Taiwan, China, the USA and the EU - so your work reaches customers on nearly every continent.
We value diversity and support personal and professional development, offering a collaborative workspace where you can thrive alongside colleagues from over 20 different nationalities. The role is mainly office-based in Espoo, with remote work possible up to 40% when work activities allow it, and occasional clean room activities to support testing or to upgrade and troubleshoot our equipment.
