08.01.18 Chief Petty Officer (CPO)/Bosun Reports To:
1. Chief Officer
Responsibilities
1. The CPO / Bosun works under the control of the Vessel Management Team in general and is in overall charge of the Petty Officers and Rating workforce.
2. He is responsible, for the safety of all personnel working under his supervision. He must ensure that all safety requirements outlined in the daily work plan are complied with and particularly the wearing of safety equipment.
3. He is responsible to the Chief Officer or Second Engineer Officer for the work performance and discipline of all members of the workforce and will work with them.
4. He will assist Senior Officers in the training of ratings for any specialised duties.
5. He is responsible for the control and issue of stores, or supervising a Petty Officer if carried, or delegating a responsible rating, other than in ships where a Spare Gear/ Stores Petty Officer is carried.
6. He is responsible to the Chief Officer for the integrity and security of deck fittings including running gear, moorings, portable tank cleaning equipment, hatches and openings. He is also responsible for routine soundings and the integrity of all watertight spaces.
7. Where experienced he will take charge of mooring/anchoring stations at the discretion of the Master.
8. The CPO / Bosun should bring any defects to the attention of the VMT and suggest remedial actions required to rectify the same.
9. He should actively participate in the vessels Unsafe Act / Unsafe Condition programme through participation in MOCCI reporting and follow up with the assistance of the Safety Officer (SAFO).
10. He should be fully conversant with Permit to Work systems and the Daily Work Planning procedures.
11. In addition he must carry out any lawful command and delegated duty as issued by the Master, Chief Officer or delegated Officer of the Watch.
