The Department of Finance and Economics at Hanken School of Economics is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in economics. We welcome candidates from all fields of specialization. The position is based at Hankens Helsinki campus, starting on 1 August 2026 or later by agreement. The position is for two years.
Hanken is a leading, internationally accredited university known for its international orientation and outstanding research quality relative to its size. We have close cooperation with the business community and an active alumni network with over 14,000 alumni working in more than 70 countries. Our master's programme is ranked number 60 in the Masters in Management 2025 ranking by the Financial Times. We offer education at bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels at two locations: Helsinki and Vaasa.
Finland has been ranked both as one of the best-governed countries in the world (Legatum Prosperity Index, 2023) and as the happiest country in the world (World Happiness Report 2026). This is due, among other things, to the high level of equality and safety; free, high-quality education at primary, secondary, and university levels; affordable healthcare and childcare; and the competitiveness and innovativeness of Finnish business life. Helsinki has been ranked as the third best city in the world in terms of quality of life by the British magazine Monocle in 2021 and ninth in the world (fourth in Europe) in terms of liveability by The Economist in 2016 and 2017.
Research in Economics at Hanken and Helsinki GSE
As a member of the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (GSE), Hankens economics unit is well integrated into a community of approximately 50 postdoctoral researchers in economics across Hanken, Aalto University, and the University of Helsinki. The Economicum building, the heart of Helsinki GSEs activities, along with the surrounding blocks, houses an additional three economic research institutes. Hankens Department of Finance and Economics includes units in both finance and economics. Researchers in all these units publish in internationally highly regarded journals in economics and finance.
Researchers at Helsinki GSE work within eleven different research groups that organize seminars and coordinate research in their respective specializations. Hankens researchers lead or actively participate in a subset of these groups: Industrial Organization, Behavioral Economics, Microeconomics, Labor Economics. These areas are also focal points for Hankens economics unit. The Behavioral Economics research group maintains the research infrastructure Helsinki LABBET, intended for experimental studies on economic decision-making.
Teaching in Economics at Hanken and the Helsinki GSE
Hanken operates in both Swedish and English and offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral programmes. Teaching in economics at the masters and doctoral levels is conducted in cooperation with Aalto University and the University of Helsinki within the framework of Helsinki GSE. Helsinki GSE also has a national mission to offer doctoral courses to PhD students at universities outside the capital region. Economists at Hanken contribute to fulfilling this national mission.
Courses offered by the economics unit are highly relevant to an ambitious business school. The unit specializes in industry studies, behavioral economics, experimental economics, economic analysis of innovation and entrepreneurship, and analysis of the financial sector.
Since 2019, the economics unit has belonged to the Department of Finance and Economics. We are developing teaching and research to better exploit synergies between the subjects (finance, economics, and statistics) within the department.
The unit has a strong research focus, which is also emphasized in Hankens strategy. Research is carried out within the framework of Helsinki GSE. In addition to top journals in our focus areas, our researchers have published in leading journals such as American Economic Review, American Economic Journals, Rand Journal of Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Quantitative Economics, and other FT50-listed journals in business disciplines such as Management Science, Leadership Quarterly, Marketing Science, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, as well as highly regarded general science journals such as Nature, Science, and PNAS.
